Railway refurbishment is a process of systematic maintenance whereby the superstructure materials – tracks and overhead lines – are replaced, either because the lifespan of the materials has ended, or because there is the need to improve railway performance. This is usually done when railway operations are suspended.
The construction process differs from refurbishment for two reasons: first, it is carried out on a platform to install new tracks and fixed electric traction equipment, i.e., there is no need to remove any old material and, second, it does not interfere with railway operations.
