Description

This project is part of the so-called Southern International Corridor (CIS), which aims to connect the Southern Ports (Sines, Setúbal, and Lisbon) to the Spanish border (Caia / Badajoz). It is a strategically important railway route for Portugal, contributing to increased international competitiveness.

This project will enable:

• A design speed of 250 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains;
• Automation and elimination of level crossings;
• Operation of freight trains up to 750 meters in length;
• Full electrification of the line (25kV-50 Hz), for speeds up to 300 km/h;
• Electronic signaling + ERTMS (ETCS N2+GSM-R);
• Track superstructure designed for speeds up to 250 km/h, with the installation of polyvalent sleepers allowing for future migration to European gauge.

The first phase of the project involved civil construction and various infrastructure works between Évora and Évora Norte, resulting in:

• 3 railway bridges;
• 8 standard engineering works;
• Treatment of various slopes;
• Excavation, embankment, and drainage.

The second phase consists of track and catenary work between Évora and Elvas / Border, including:

• Construction of 90 km of track superstructure;
• Construction of 101 km of catenary.

This is the largest Portuguese railway project in the last 100 years, with SOMAFEL leading the consortium formed by SOMAFEL, TEIXEIRA DUARTE, MOTA-ENGIL, and MOTA-ENGIL RAILWAY.
