As part of the modernization project of the Beira Alta Railway Line between Guarda and Vilar Formoso, this initiative forms an integral component of the Northern International Corridor and is one of the priority projects within the Strategic Transport and Infrastructure Plan.

The project involved the modernization of approximately 46 kilometers of railway track along the existing Beira Alta Line, specifically in the section between Celorico da Beira and Guarda.

The work carried out by Somafel included:

• Complete track renewal, incorporating route adjustments to ensure an increase in maximum towed load and improved interoperability of the line;
• Reconfiguration of the electrification system, as well as the traction return and protective earthing system (RCT+TP), necessitated by the renovation of the track along the existing railway corridor.
