The North Line runs along a large coastal corridor (North-South Corridor), which covers the main ports, airports, logistics platforms and towns on the Portuguese Coast. Most of the population, economic activities and employment are concentrated on this corridor.

The modernization project aimed to reduce the travel time between Lisbon and Porto, ensuring greater safety, comfort and reliability and reducing the operating costs of the country’s main railway infrastructure.

This megaproject was subdivided into sections involving similar works. SOMAFEL, with a 60% stake in Joint Venture, was awarded 5 of these basic sections.
